Master
Alloys
Aluminum Modifiers - Strontium
An aluminum beryllium master alloy can be introduced into aluminum
magnesium melts to reduce magnesium losses. Aluminum 5% beryllium alloy can
minimize magnesium losses in magnesium alloys by developing a liquid barrier
on the surface of the melt preventing the
oxidization of the magnesium.
Aluminum
Grain Refiners - Tibor
Close control of the cast structure is a major
requirement in the production of high quality aluminum alloy products. The
most effective way to provide a fine and uniform as-cast grain structure
is to add nucleating agents to the melt to control crystal formation during
solidification.
Modification
of the eutectic silicon phase form coarse platelets to a fine fibrous structure
in hypoeutectic aluminum silicon alloy castings results in improved soundness
and mechanical properties, particularly ductility. The use of strontium to "modify"
the structure of hypoeutectic aluminum silicon casting alloys is an effective
and widely accepted practice.
Aluminum Hardeners - Magnesium, Iron, Copper and Manganese
Specialty Alloy - Beryllium
Aluminum
The
mechanical and physical properties of aluminum are enhanced with the use of
alloying elements. These are commonly referred to as hardeners. These master
alloys readily go into solution at lower liquid aluminum temperatures, thus
minimizing dross formation and solubility of hydrogen.
